Our guide will recommend authentic local restaurants with traditional cuisine and regional flavors.

Your day begins in Luoyang, one of China's great ancient capitals. After arriving by high-speed train, your private driver will meet you at the station and take you directly to your first stop.

We recommend arriving in Luoyang in the morning so you can make the most of your day. Since Longmen Grottoes and Shaolin Temple are in different areas, having private transportation makes a big difference—you won't need to figure out local buses or juggle multiple transfers. Once you meet your driver, simply leave your luggage in the vehicle and settle in. We'll take care of the logistics while you get ready for a day of history, culture, and kung fu.

Explore the Longmen Grottoes
Your first major stop is the Longmen Grottoes, one of China's finest collections of ancient Buddhist art. Instead of simply rushing from one photo spot to another, take your time walking along the Yi River and looking closely at the carvings. You'll find thousands of statues and inscriptions carved into the limestone cliffs, representing centuries of Chinese religious art and craftsmanship. The most impressive area is around Fengxian Temple, where the enormous Tang Dynasty sculptures give you a real sense of the scale and ambition behind Longmen.

If you're interested in history or Chinese art, our guide can point out the details that are easy to miss on your own, from differences between the Northern Wei and Tang Dynasty sculptures to the stories behind some of the most important carvings. If you prefer a quieter visit, you'll also have time to explore at your own pace. Once you've had your fill of stone carvings and riverside views, it's time to leave Luoyang behind and head toward Dengfeng.

Enjoy a Local Chinese Lunch
Before continuing to Shaolin Temple, we'll stop for lunch and give you a chance to slow down for a while. We prefer to keep lunch simple and comfortable rather than treating it like a formal tour-group meal. You'll enjoy a local Chinese meal at a convenient restaurant along the route, with enough time to eat properly without turning the afternoon into a race against the clock.

If you have dietary preferences or foods you avoid, just let us know in advance. We'll do our best to arrange something suitable. After lunch, relax in the car while we continue toward Dengfeng and the world of Shaolin.

Discover Shaolin Temple
Arriving in Dengfeng, you'll enter the world of Shaolin Temple, famous around the globe for its kung fu but equally important in the history of Chinese Zen Buddhism. Take your time exploring the temple grounds, including its traditional halls and courtyards. The atmosphere here is quite different from Longmen—the morning was about stone, sculpture, and Buddhist art; here, you'll experience a living temple closely connected with Chinese religious and martial arts traditions. If you've always associated Shaolin with kung fu, this is a good opportunity to see the bigger picture. Our guide can explain how Zen Buddhism and martial arts became so closely connected with the temple and point out the historical details behind the buildings you see. Rather than overwhelming you with a long history lecture, we'll focus on the stories and details that actually make the place more interesting as you walk through it.

Walk Through the Pagoda Forest
After exploring the temple, continue to the Pagoda Forest, one of the most distinctive parts of the Shaolin complex. More than a collection of old towers, the Pagoda Forest is a cemetery for generations of Shaolin monks. The pagodas vary in size, shape, and design, reflecting different periods of the temple's long history. Compared with the main temple area, this part of the visit feels quieter and more atmospheric. Take a slow walk among the towers, look at the different architectural details, and you'll get a much stronger sense of just how long Shaolin's story stretches back.

For anyone interested in Chinese history, architecture, or photography, this is often one of those places that becomes more memorable the longer you spend looking around.

Watch Shaolin Kung Fu in Action
Then comes the part many people have been waiting for: a Shaolin kung fu performance. Seeing Shaolin martial arts performed live is very different from watching kung fu on a screen. You'll see traditional routines, weapons, impressive physical skills, and fast-paced movements performed right in front of you. We'll arrange the sightseeing sequence around the performance schedule whenever possible, so you can enjoy the show without having to constantly check the clock. It's also a fun part of the day if you're traveling with children, while first-time visitors to China often find it one of the most memorable experiences of the entire trip.

Return to Luoyang for Your Departure Train
After the kung fu performance, it's time to head back to Luoyang. Since you'll be catching a high-speed train afterward, we'll plan the return journey around your departure time and leave a reasonable buffer for the trip. The goal is to get you back to the station comfortably—not to have you sprinting through the railway station at the last minute. Your private driver will drop you off directly at Luoyang High-Speed Railway Station, where you can continue your journey to your next destination.

A Long Day, But Surprisingly Easy

I was a little worried about doing Longmen Grottoes and Shaolin Temple in one day, but the whole thing was much easier than I expected. The driver was already waiting when we arrived in Luoyang and everything moved pretty smoothly from there. I especially liked that we didn't have to think about getting from Luoyang to Dengfeng ourselves. The day was busy, but it never felt chaotic.

Thank you, Elara! That Luoyang–Dengfeng connection is exactly what we try to make easy for our guests. It's a full day, but with the transportation sorted out, you can spend your energy enjoying the places instead of watching the clock.

The Transfers Made a Big Difference

We considered doing Jinan, Mount Tai and Qufu on our own, but after looking at the transport between the three places, we decided to book a private tour.
Honestly, it saved us a lot of hassle. The driver was already waiting when we came out of the hotel, the transfers were smooth, and we didn't spend half the day figuring out where to go next. We could also leave our luggage in the car during the transfers. The itinerary is fairly full, but the organization made it manageable.

Thanks, Ivo! That's one of the main reasons we designed the route this way. The distances aren't huge, but handling several hotels, attractions and transfers yourself can take more time than expected. We're glad the private service gave you more time to enjoy the actual trip.

The cave rafting was a fun surprise

I wasn't sure what to expect from the Underground Dragon Palace, but the rafting ended up being one of the funniest parts of the trip. It's not some crazy white-water ride, so don't expect that — it's more of a strange and enjoyable way to see the cave. After spending most of the previous day climbing stairs, sitting in a raft underground felt pretty perfect. The cave itself was also much bigger than I expected.

Thanks, Tavian! "After all those stairs, sitting in a raft felt perfect" made us smile. And we agree — the cave rafting is more about the unusual experience than extreme thrills, which makes it a nice contrast to the hiking day.

A Surprisingly Easygoing Day

What I liked most was the pace. I've done private tours before where "private" somehow still means being rushed from one place to another. This one felt different. We had time to actually look around and ask questions. The guide was especially good in Qufu. I knew very little about Confucius before the trip, but by the end of the day I understood why the place is so important. The driver was also always where he was supposed to be, which sounds like a small thing but makes a big difference when you' re traveling with luggage.

Thanks, Niamh! We're really happy you enjoyed the slower pace. We know nobody wants to spend a whole day watching the clock. Glad everything felt easy and comfortable, and we hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Shandong!
