Your private Yantai day tour begins with pickup from your hotel or Yantai train station. Meet your driver and head into the city for your first stop, Yantai Hill. There is no need to worry about finding taxis or figuring out local connections. Your private vehicle stays with you throughout the day, making it easy to move between Yantai and Penglai while keeping the sightseeing schedule flexible.
Start with the place that gave Yantai its name. During the Ming Dynasty, a beacon platform was established here as part of the coastal defense system against Japanese pirate raids. Smoke and fire signals could be used to warn nearby areas, and this history eventually became closely connected with the name Yantai.
Today, Yantai Hill is a compact historical area overlooking the sea. Walk up through the old streets and explore landmarks including the Yantai Hill Lighthouse and former consulate buildings, which reflect Yantai's later role as an important port and trading city. The interesting part is the contrast: within a relatively small area, you can see traces of Ming-era coastal defense, later maritime trade, and Yantai's development as a modern port city.
From Yantai Hill, continue to the Zhangyu Wine Museum, where Yantai's story takes a completely different turn—from coastal defense to wine. Founded by Chinese industrialist Zhang Bishi in the late Qing Dynasty, Zhangyu became one of the pioneers of China's modern wine industry. The museum traces how the company introduced European wine-making techniques and helped establish Yantai as one of China's best-known wine-producing regions. Inside, explore historic documents, old wine-making equipment, wine cellars, and exhibitions covering the development of Zhangyu. The visit gives you a useful glimpse into how an industry that once felt distinctly foreign gradually became part of China's own modern commercial history. And yes, this is one of those museums where the cellar is arguably more interesting than the display cases. The old underground wine storage areas add a little atmosphere to the story. After the visit, your driver will take you onward toward Penglai. Sit back and enjoy the journey—the afternoon is all about Yantai's most famous seaside legend.
Arrive in Penglai, a coastal city famous throughout China for its connection with legends, immortals, and mysterious sea mirages. Your main stop is Penglai Pavilion, traditionally regarded as one of China's famous ancient towers. The site is best known for the legendary story of the Eight Immortals crossing the sea and the atmospheric mirages once associated with the waters around Penglai. Rather than treating the pavilion as just another historic building, take time to explore the wider complex. Walk between the traditional halls and pavilions, look out across the Bohai Sea, and imagine why ancient Chinese writers described this coastline as a "fairyland on earth." The scenery is particularly atmospheric when the sea is calm or slightly misty. On exceptionally clear days, the distant coastline and open water create a completely different view.
After exploring Penglai Pavilion, meet your driver and begin the return journey to Yantai. You can choose to be dropped off at your Yantai hotel or train station, depending on your travel plans. If you are continuing your journey by high-speed train, we can arrange the return timing around your departure schedule. For travelers staying overnight in Yantai, the tour ends with a convenient hotel drop-off.
