Yu Garden (豫园) is a historic classical Chinese garden in the heart of Shanghai's Old City, known for its elegant pavilions, rockeries, ponds and winding corridors. It offers a glimpse of traditional Shanghai beyond the city's modern skyline.
The experience extends beyond the garden itself. Yuyuan Bazaar, the Nine-Bend Bridge, City God Temple and nearby old streets add local food, shopping and plenty of atmosphere. If it's your first time in Shanghai, allow around half a day to explore the area. In this guide, we'll share the highlights, practical tips and local insights you need to make the most of your Yu Garden experience.

The Shanghai government lists Yuyuan Garden at No. 168 Fuyou Road and describes it as a traditional Chinese garden beside the City God Temple, known for its pavilions, rock formations and ponds.
Yu Garden, also known as Yuyuan Garden or Yu Yuan, is a classical Chinese garden in the historic center of Shanghai.
It dates back to the Ming Dynasty. Construction began in 1559 under Pan Yunduan, a government official who wanted to create a peaceful garden where his parents could enjoy their later years. The garden was built in stages over nearly two decades before being completed around 1590.
The garden is not huge by Chinese classical-garden standards, but that is part of its appeal. Within a relatively compact area, you'll find almost everything associated with traditional Jiangnan garden design: halls, pavilions, ponds, rockeries, carved walls, corridors and carefully framed views. And then you step outside the garden and immediately find yourself in one of Shanghai's busiest historic commercial areas. That contrast is very Shanghai.
You may see the attraction written in several ways:
· Yu Garden
· Yuyuan Garden
· Yu Yuan
· Yuyuan Shanghai
They all refer to the same historic garden.
The Chinese character 豫 (yù) carries meanings associated with pleasure, contentment and ease. That fits the original purpose of the garden particularly well: it was designed as a place for Pan Yunduan's parents to enjoy a peaceful retirement.
So when you search for "Yuyuan Shanghai", don't worry if you see several slightly different English names. You're generally looking at the same historic garden and its surrounding tourist area.
This is one of the most common sources of confusion for first-time visitors.
Yu Garden is the classical garden itself. Yuyuan Bazaar is the busy commercial area surrounding it.
| Yu Garden | Yuyuan Bazaar | |
|---|---|---|
| What It Is | Historic classical Chinese garden | Lively commercial and cultural area |
| Main Experience | Pavilions, ponds, rockeries, corridors & traditional architecture | Traditional-style buildings, shops, local snacks & street life |
| Entrance | Ticketed attraction | Open public area |
| Time Needed | About 1–2 hours | Around 1–2 hours, depending on shopping and dining |
| Best Time | Daytime | Late afternoon to evening |
| Best For | History, architecture, gardens & photography | Food, shopping, local atmosphere & night views |
| Don't Miss | Grand Rockery, Exquisite Jade Rock & Dragon Walls | Nine-Bend Bridge, traditional streets & illuminated buildings |
| How to Combine | Explore the garden first | Visit after Yu Garden for food and evening atmosphere |
The Yuyuan Bazaar sits immediately around the garden and is known for its traditional-style buildings, shops, snacks, crafts and restaurants. It also becomes particularly atmospheric after dark when the buildings are illuminated.
Our advice: don't choose between the two. Visit the garden first, then explore the bazaar afterward.
