Day 1 | Luoyang: Longmen Grottoes

Accommodation Accommodation:
4-star/5-star standard room
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

Your Luoyang trip starts around noon when you arrive by high-speed train. Your private driver will meet you at the railway station and take you directly to lunch, so there's no need to figure out local transportation after getting off the train. After lunch, head to Longmen Grottoes, one of the highlights of your time in Luoyang.

As you enter the scenic area, the landscape changes quickly. The busy city gives way to the cliffs and wooded hills along the Yi River, where thousands of Buddhist statues and inscriptions have been carved into the rock over centuries. Rather than rushing from one grotto to another, take your time along the main walking route. The scale of the site becomes more impressive as you move through it, with smaller niches gradually giving way to larger and more elaborate carvings.

The highlight is Fengxian Temple, where the enormous Vairocana Buddha overlooks the river and surrounding cliffs. Standing beneath the statues gives you a much better sense of their scale than photographs ever can. Look closely at the details around the main Buddha as well—the expressions, clothing, and different poses reveal how Buddhist art changed over different periods. The scenery is part of the experience, too. From several points along the route, you can look across the Yi River toward the opposite hillside. The combination of cliffs, ancient carvings, green slopes, and flowing water makes Longmen feel very different from a typical indoor historical site. If you enjoy photography, the afternoon light can also create beautiful contrasts on the rock faces. We'll keep the timing flexible so you can spend a little longer at the areas you find most interesting.

After the visit, your driver will take you to your hotel in Luoyang for check-in. We leave the evening free rather than adding another major attraction. You can take a break at the hotel or head out later for a casual dinner and explore some of Luoyang's local food on your own.

Day 2 | Luoyang: White Horse Temple, Old Town & Luoyang Museum

Accommodation Accommodation:
N/A (Flexible, can be included based on your needs)
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

After breakfast at your hotel, your driver will pick you up and take you to White Horse Temple, giving you a quieter start to the second day. White Horse Temple has a very different atmosphere from Longmen Grottoes. Instead of dramatic cliffs and enormous statues, you'll find traditional temple courtyards, ancient trees, stone inscriptions, and peaceful halls.

Take your time walking through the main temple grounds and looking at the details of the buildings. The quiet courtyards make it easy to slow down for a while and appreciate the architecture rather than simply checking another attraction off your list. One of the interesting things about White Horse Temple is its connection with the early spread of Buddhism in China. You can also find temple architecture influenced by different Buddhist traditions, making this more than just a historical temple visit.

After exploring the main grounds, we'll continue into the city for lunch. You can try some of Luoyang's local specialties, such as Luoyang Water Banquet, beef soup, mutton soup, or other regional dishes. There's no need to make lunch overly formal. A simple local meal gives you a chance to rest before the afternoon sightseeing, and you can always save some room for snacks later when you explore the Old Town.

After lunch, head to Luoyang Old Town. This part of the day is less about seeing a single major monument and more about experiencing the everyday side of the city. Walk through the traditional streets, browse local shops, and take a look at the old-style buildings and small food stalls along the way. You may notice that the atmosphere here feels completely different from the morning at White Horse Temple. Instead of quiet temple courtyards, there is the sound of people chatting, shops opening their doors, and local snacks being prepared on the street. Take your time here. If you spot a small shop or a street corner that catches your eye, stop for a while. These ordinary details often give you a more memorable impression of Luoyang than simply moving from one famous landmark to another.

Next, continue to Luoyang Museum. After seeing the historical sites in person, the museum is a useful way to connect everything together. Luoyang served as an important capital for several dynasties, and the museum's collections help explain why the city became such an influential center of culture and politics. As you walk through the exhibits, you'll see a wide range of artifacts from different periods, including ceramics, bronze objects, pottery figures, and Tang Dynasty treasures. Pay particular attention to the Tang sancai pottery. The colorful glazed figures are visually striking, but they also offer clues about life in Tang-era Luoyang and the connections between the city and the wider world.

Flexible Museum Alternative During Peak Periods
During summer holidays and major public holidays, Luoyang Museum can become difficult to reserve in advance. If tickets are unavailable or the reservation situation doesn't work with your train schedule, we can replace the museum visit with Luoyang Folk Museum. This keeps the afternoon relaxed while giving you a different perspective on local culture, traditional homes, customs, and everyday life. The exact arrangement can be adjusted according to your reservation status and departure time.

After sightseeing, your private driver will take you directly to Luoyang railway station for your high-speed train. We'll arrange the timing around your actual train departure, so you won't need to worry about finding a taxi or carrying your luggage between different parts of the city. Your two-day Luoyang journey ends here, after taking you from ancient grottoes and Buddhist temples to old streets, local life, and the city's historical treasures.

Worth It, Even in the Summer Heat

We visited in summer and, wow, Luoyang was hot. Longmen was still absolutely worth it, but bring water and wear comfortable shoes! We were glad the day wasn't packed with outdoor sights. After spending a few hours at Longmen, we were definitely ready for some air conditioning and a cold drink. The next morning at White Horse Temple felt much easier, and having a slower start made a big difference.

Thanks, Mireille! And yes — the comfortable shoes advice is definitely worth repeating. Summer in Luoyang can be intense, so keeping the outdoor sightseeing focused is usually much more enjoyable.

Shaolin Was More Than I Expected

I came mostly for Shaolin Kung Fu, but the temple and Pagoda Forest gave me a much better understanding of where the tradition comes from. The temple grounds were quite peaceful, which I wasn't really expecting. The Kung Fu performance was definitely the most fun part for me. Some of the movements looked almost impossible. Our driver was also very punctual, which made the second day much easier since we had a train to catch afterward.

Thanks, Eira! Glad you enjoyed both the quieter side of Shaolin and the Kung Fu show. And happy to hear everything worked smoothly with your train—hope the rest of your China trip went just as well!

I'm Glad We Didn't Do the Transport Ourselves

I originally thought we could just take taxis between everything ourselves. After looking at the locations, I changed my mind. Having the car waiting for us made a big difference, especially with only one day. The driver was on time, the vehicle was comfortable, and we didn't waste time figuring out where to go next. I also liked that we weren't pushed through the Old Town. We had some free time to wander around and grab snacks. Small thing, but it made the day feel much more like a trip and less like a checklist.

Thanks, Elio! We're really glad the private car made your day easier. With only one day in Luoyang, having the transport sorted out makes such a difference. It was a pleasure having you with us!

A Long Day, But Surprisingly Easy

I was a little worried about doing Longmen Grottoes and Shaolin Temple in one day, but the whole thing was much easier than I expected. The driver was already waiting when we arrived in Luoyang and everything moved pretty smoothly from there. I especially liked that we didn't have to think about getting from Luoyang to Dengfeng ourselves. The day was busy, but it never felt chaotic.

Thank you, Elara! That Luoyang–Dengfeng connection is exactly what we try to make easy for our guests. It's a full day, but with the transportation sorted out, you can spend your energy enjoying the places instead of watching the clock.
