Day 1 | Luoyang: Longmen Grottoes & Old Town

Accommodation Accommodation:
4-star/5-star standard room
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

Your journey begins around noon when you arrive in Luoyang by high-speed train. After you step out of the station, your private driver will be waiting to meet you and take you directly into the city.

Before sightseeing, we'll stop for lunch so you can recharge after the train ride. This is a good chance to try some local Luoyang dishes without turning the first meal into a formal dining experience. If you're curious about Luoyang Water Banquet or other local specialties, just let us know what you'd like to try.

After lunch, we'll head to the Longmen Grottoes, one of the highlights of your time in Luoyang. At first, the scale of Longmen is easy to underestimate. As you walk along the Yi River and the cliffs gradually come into view, you'll start noticing small niches and Buddha figures carved into the rock. Then suddenly, the carvings become larger, denser, and far more impressive. The most memorable section is around Fengxian Temple, where the enormous statue of Vairocana Buddha looks across the river. Rather than rushing from one photo stop to another, take a moment here to look closely at the faces, robes, and details carved into the surrounding cliffs. These small details reveal just how much craftsmanship went into creating Longmen more than a thousand years ago. The setting makes the experience even better. With the Yi River below and the green hills rising on either side, Longmen is not simply an archaeological site—it's a beautiful landscape where history and nature have become part of the same scene.

After Longmen, we'll drive back toward the city and spend some time exploring Luoyang's old town. This is where the mood changes completely. Instead of grand temples and ancient stone carvings, you'll find small shops, traditional buildings, local snacks, and the everyday rhythm of the city. Take your time walking through the old streets. You might stop for a snack, browse a small shop, or simply sit down for a while and watch local life pass by. There's no need to treat this part as a checklist—the charm comes from slowing down. As evening approaches, the streets become even more atmospheric. Warm lights come on, food stalls start getting busier, and the old neighborhood takes on a lively but relaxed feel.

After your visit, your driver will take you to your hotel for check-in. The rest of the evening is yours. You can head out again for dinner and explore more of Luoyang on your own, or simply relax at the hotel after a full day of sightseeing.

Day 2 | Luoyang to Dengfeng by private car: Shaolin Temple, Pagoda Forest & Kung Fu

Accommodation Accommodation:
N/A (Flexible, can be included based on your needs)
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

After breakfast, your driver will pick you up at the hotel and take you to Dengfeng, the mountain city best known as the home of Shaolin Temple. The journey gives you a chance to slow down after yesterday's sightseeing. As you get closer to Songshan Mountain, the scenery gradually changes from the urban landscape of Luoyang to rolling hills and greener surroundings.

Your first stop is Shaolin Temple. For many people, the name "Shaolin" immediately brings Kung Fu to mind. But once you enter the temple, you'll discover that its story goes far beyond martial arts. The temple has been closely connected with Chan Buddhism for centuries, and its courtyards, halls, ancient trees, inscriptions, and stone monuments offer a quieter side of Shaolin that is easy to miss if you only come for the Kung Fu. As you walk through the temple grounds, we'll help you understand how Buddhism, meditation, and martial arts gradually became intertwined here. Instead of simply pointing out buildings, we'll connect what you see with the history behind them, making the visit much easier to appreciate.

From the temple, continue to the Pagoda Forest. This is one of the most atmospheric parts of the Shaolin visit. Hundreds of stone pagodas stand among the trees, each connected to monks from different periods of Shaolin's history. Unlike the grand scale of Longmen, the Pagoda Forest feels much quieter and more intimate. The weathered stone, surrounding trees, and mountain backdrop create a peaceful atmosphere that invites you to slow down. If you enjoy photography, this is also a great place to take your time. Look beyond the famous landmarks and notice the different shapes, carvings, and details of the individual pagodas.

After the morning visit, we'll stop for lunch in Dengfeng. You can use this break to rest and enjoy some local food before the afternoon performance. We'll choose a convenient restaurant so you won't have to spend extra time searching for somewhere to eat or making an unnecessary detour. If you have dietary preferences or specific dishes you want to try, simply let us know in advance.

After lunch, it's time to see the side of Shaolin that most people have been waiting for—Kung Fu. The performance brings together traditional martial arts techniques, weapons, speed, balance, flexibility, and incredible physical control. Some movements look almost effortless from the audience, while others make you wonder how much training it takes to perform them so precisely. This is more than just an entertaining show. After learning about Shaolin's history in the morning, seeing Kung Fu performed in person gives you a much clearer picture of how martial arts became such an important part of the identity of this place.

When the performance finishes, we'll begin the journey back. If you're leaving from Luoyang, your private vehicle will take you back to the station in time for your onward high-speed train. Alternatively, if your next destination is better connected through Zhengzhou, we can arrange your transfer there instead, allowing you to continue by high-speed train or catch your flight. We'll plan the departure around your actual train or flight schedule, giving you enough time for the transfer rather than leaving you to work out the connections yourself.

Worth It, Even in the Summer Heat

We visited in summer and, wow, Luoyang was hot. Longmen was still absolutely worth it, but bring water and wear comfortable shoes! We were glad the day wasn't packed with outdoor sights. After spending a few hours at Longmen, we were definitely ready for some air conditioning and a cold drink. The next morning at White Horse Temple felt much easier, and having a slower start made a big difference.

Thanks, Mireille! And yes — the comfortable shoes advice is definitely worth repeating. Summer in Luoyang can be intense, so keeping the outdoor sightseeing focused is usually much more enjoyable.

Shaolin Was More Than I Expected

I came mostly for Shaolin Kung Fu, but the temple and Pagoda Forest gave me a much better understanding of where the tradition comes from. The temple grounds were quite peaceful, which I wasn't really expecting. The Kung Fu performance was definitely the most fun part for me. Some of the movements looked almost impossible. Our driver was also very punctual, which made the second day much easier since we had a train to catch afterward.

Thanks, Eira! Glad you enjoyed both the quieter side of Shaolin and the Kung Fu show. And happy to hear everything worked smoothly with your train—hope the rest of your China trip went just as well!

I'm Glad We Didn't Do the Transport Ourselves

I originally thought we could just take taxis between everything ourselves. After looking at the locations, I changed my mind. Having the car waiting for us made a big difference, especially with only one day. The driver was on time, the vehicle was comfortable, and we didn't waste time figuring out where to go next. I also liked that we weren't pushed through the Old Town. We had some free time to wander around and grab snacks. Small thing, but it made the day feel much more like a trip and less like a checklist.

Thanks, Elio! We're really glad the private car made your day easier. With only one day in Luoyang, having the transport sorted out makes such a difference. It was a pleasure having you with us!

A Long Day, But Surprisingly Easy

I was a little worried about doing Longmen Grottoes and Shaolin Temple in one day, but the whole thing was much easier than I expected. The driver was already waiting when we arrived in Luoyang and everything moved pretty smoothly from there. I especially liked that we didn't have to think about getting from Luoyang to Dengfeng ourselves. The day was busy, but it never felt chaotic.

Thank you, Elara! That Luoyang–Dengfeng connection is exactly what we try to make easy for our guests. It's a full day, but with the transportation sorted out, you can spend your energy enjoying the places instead of watching the clock.
