Morning: Leshan Giant Buddha – UNESCO World Heritage Site
Arrive at Leshan Giant Buddha Scenic Area, a famous UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carved in 713 AD (Tang Dynasty), the 71-metre-tall Maitreya Buddha is the world's largest cliff-carved stone Buddha. Sitting at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi Rivers, this ancient statue was built to calm river waves and protect local travellers.
Walk through quiet bamboo and cypress paths before heading down the cliffside Nine-Bend Plank Road for close-up views of the grand Buddha. Observe delicate details including 1,021 spiral hair curls and a practical hidden ancient drainage system that protects the statue from erosion. Learn touching stories of Monk Haitong, the founder of this great project. Spend 3–4 hours sightseeing and taking photos before returning to Chengdu for lunch.
Afternoon: Wuhou Shrine & Jinli Ancient Street
After lunch with authentic local Sichuan dishes, visit Wuhou Shrine, China's only temple enshrining both emperor and prime minister. Built in 223 AD, it honours Zhuge Liang, the legendary wise strategist of the Three Kingdoms period. Explore ancient courtyards, historic stone steles and old cypress trees, while your guide tells vivid Three Kingdoms history and classic tales of loyalty and wisdom.
Next, stroll to Jinli Ancient Street, known as "No.1 Ancient Street of Western Shu". This well-preserved old street features traditional Sichuan architecture and red lanterns, fully showcasing Chengdu's "Brocade City" charm. Visit intangible cultural heritage workshops and taste popular local treats like dan dan noodles, three cannons and spicy tofu pudding. You can also buy handmade souvenirs and experience authentic Chengdu folk culture at ease.
Optional Evening: Shu Feng Ya Yun Sichuan Opera (Self-Paid Extra Fee)
For a classic Chengdu night experience, choose the optional self-paid Shu Feng Ya Yun Sichuan Opera. This 90-minute variety show presents top Sichuan opera performances, including the famous face-changing (Bian Lian), exciting fire-spitting, folk music and funny clown shows.
