In the morning, your private guide and driver will be waiting for you at your hotel lobby or high-speed rail station—no rushing, no confusion, just a smooth start to the day.

Our first stop is Yu Garden, a classic glimpse into old Shanghai. Built in the Ming Dynasty, it's a beautiful traditional Chinese garden with winding paths, elegant pavilions, koi-filled ponds, and those iconic zigzag bridges you've probably seen in photos. Now, here's the insider move: come early. Because once the day properly starts, this place gets very popular—let's just say you won't be the only one trying to take that perfect photo. In the morning, though, it's much more relaxed. You can wander, take your time, and actually enjoy the atmosphere instead of navigating through crowds.

Next, we stroll over to City God Temple, just a few steps from Yu Garden—but the vibe shifts instantly. This is one of the most famous Taoist temples in Shanghai, with beautifully layered roofs, red walls, golden details, and a constant swirl of incense in the air. It's lively, a little chaotic, but in a very authentic, old-Shanghai way. You'll see locals coming in to pray and make wishes—some for peace, some for luck, some for business (Shanghai priorities, you know). Even if you're just visiting, it's worth stepping inside to take in the atmosphere and admire the intricate details. Think of it as a quick but vivid glimpse into the city's spiritual side—right in the middle of all the action.

By now, after a full morning of walking, you're probably starting to feel it—it's lunch time. If you're into street food, this area is basically a food paradise. Around the old town, you'll find everything from soup dumplings, crispy pancakes, and noodles to milk tea, ice cream, even hot pot or a quick McDonald's—whatever you're in the mood for, it's all here.  Some of the well-known spots do get very busy (yes, serious lines), so unless you're set on a specific place, it's often smarter to pick a quieter one nearby—same great taste, much less waiting.

After lunch, we head into a completely different side of Shanghai—the French Concession. This area feels almost like stepping into Europe, with tree-lined streets, old villas, and a slower, more relaxed pace. It's perfect for a gentle walk, a bit of people-watching, and seeing how Shanghai blends East and West so effortlessly.

From here, it's an easy walk to Tianzifang—no need for a car, just follow the small lanes and enjoy the transition. Tianzifang is where things get a bit more playful. Hidden inside narrow alleys, it's packed with tiny shops, local designer studios, cafés, and all kinds of quirky finds. It's a little maze—in a good way—so getting "slightly lost" is part of the fun. Compared to the calm elegance of the French Concession, this is the more creative, lively side of Shanghai. Take your time, explore a bit, maybe grab a drink or a snack—there's always something interesting around the next corner.

As the evening sets in, we'll wrap up the day at The Bund—and honestly, this is one thing you simply shouldn't miss on your first day in Shanghai.
Is it a bit classic? Sure.
Is it touristy? Absolutely.
Is it still 100% worth it? Without a doubt.
While the Bund is beautiful at any time of day (especially early morning when it's quiet), it truly comes alive at night. Historic buildings on one side, futuristic skyline on the other—it's Shanghai at its best. Just slow down, take a walk, and enjoy the view. A perfect way to end the day.

At the end of the day, we'll take you back to your hotel or high-speed rail station—nice and easy. No rushing, no "we have to go now" moments. If you fall in love with a spot and want to linger a little longer, we'll happily go with the flow. A relaxed, easy finish—just the perfect way to wrap up a great day in Shanghai.

What Our Travelers Say

The trains made the route surprisingly easy

I had never traveled around China by high-speed train before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Once we got the hang of it, it was actually one of the easiest parts of the trip. Having someone meet us at the stations was especially helpful because some of the stations are enormous. We could just get off the train, find our driver and move on.

Thanks, Marlowe! Glad to hear our train journeys turned out to be easier than expected. Those big stations can definitely feel a bit overwhelming at first, so it's great to hear that having our driver there made things smoother. Hope you enjoyed the rest of the trip!

A Photographer's Kind of Day

If you like old architecture, bring a camera. Badaguan was probably my favorite part because every street seemed to have a slightly different look. The church and railway station were also great photo stops. I liked that the tour wasn't only about famous sights — there was plenty of time to notice small details along the way.

Thanks, Soren! We're delighted that the architectural side of Qingdao caught your eye. The city has so many small details that are easy to miss when you're in a hurry.

Definitely earned its reputation

I knew Mount Tai would be the big highlight for me, but it was still better than expected. The views kept changing as we went higher, and there was something really special about seeing the old temples and inscriptions along the mountain. The whole trip was also very well organized. We had enough time at each place without feeling like we were constantly watching the clock.

Beautiful City, Bring Comfortable Shoes

We really enjoyed the tour, although there is definitely a fair amount of walking, so comfortable shoes are a must. The old streets were probably my favorite part because there was something interesting around every corner. Baotu Spring was busy when we visited, but the water itself was beautiful. Overall, it was a very nice way to see the central part of Jinan in one day.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful review and practical tip! We're glad you enjoyed the mix of Jinan's famous springs and quieter old streets. It was a pleasure to be part of your day in Jinan, and we hope you took home some lovely memories of the city.
