Your Guizhou journey starts with an early arrival in Guiyang. Rather than spending your first day in the city, your private driver will meet you at the airport and take you straight toward the mountains, where the scenery quickly changes from urban streets to layers of green hills and limestone peaks.
After lunch near the airport, continue to Ditang, a quieter Buyi community tucked among Guizhou's karst landscape. This is where the trip begins to feel very different from a conventional Guizhou tour. Instead of simply stopping at a viewpoint, you'll walk directly into the landscape. A roughly two-hour trail takes you through the karst peaks surrounding the village, following local mountain paths rather than a heavily developed sightseeing route. The limestone formations rise around you, while small villages, farmland, and forest appear between the peaks.
As you finish the hike, you'll arrive at our private cave camping base. Built into the surrounding karst environment, the camp gives you a chance to experience the mountains after the day-trippers have left. Depending on the local arrangements, you may also have the opportunity to hear or experience elements of Buyi village culture and mountain songs.
Dinner and the evening are intentionally relaxed. There is no need to rush through another attraction—you're already where we want you to be.
Wake up among the karst peaks and enjoy the quiet morning before continuing deeper into southeastern Guizhou. Today's drive is part of the experience. Instead of connecting major tourist cities by the fastest possible route, you'll travel through mountain roads and rural landscapes toward Sandu, one of the most important areas for Shui culture in Guizhou.
Along the way, stop at a spectacular sky bridge stretching across the mountain landscape. From above, you can see how dramatically the terrain changes here—deep valleys, forested slopes and distant peaks disappearing into the horizon.
After lunch, visit the Shui Ethnic Museum in Sandu. This is more than a quick museum stop: it gives you the background needed to understand the Shui communities you'll encounter later. You'll learn about Shui history, traditional clothing, customs and, particularly, the fascinating Shui Water Script, a unique writing tradition closely connected with Shui culture. Where possible, the experience goes beyond simply looking at displays. You'll have a chance to understand how these traditions fit into local life and why they have survived in the mountains for so long.
From Sandu, continue toward Zenlei and settle into a traditional Shui village stay. In the evening, take a slow walk around the village. Wooden houses, mountain slopes and everyday village life replace the usual hotel-and-shopping-street experience. It is a simple evening, but that is exactly the point: you're staying in the community rather than just visiting it.
After breakfast, leave Zenlei and continue into another beautiful corner of Guizhou, where mountain villages seem to disappear into the surrounding forests.
Your first stop is Bai Niao Miao Village, where you'll have the chance to try on traditional Miao clothing. Rather than simply photographing the costumes, take some time to appreciate the embroidery, patterns, silver ornaments, and craftsmanship behind them. It's a fun and personal way to get closer to Miao culture.
After lunch, continue toward Moon Mountain, one of the most scenic areas of the journey. Here, you'll leave the main road behind and follow a roughly 1.5-hour mountain trail. The route winds through lush vegetation and quiet rural landscapes, with occasional glimpses of villages tucked into the folds of the mountains.
By the time you arrive at your Moon Mountain homestay, you'll be well away from the crowds. Spend the evening enjoying the slower rhythm of mountain life, perhaps with a cup of tea and a view of the surrounding hills.
Today brings one of the most scenic stretches of the trip. After breakfast, head out to explore the rice terraces around Moon Mountain. The landscape changes with the seasons, but the combination of layered terraces, forested hills, and scattered villages creates a distinctly Guizhou view.
Set off on a roughly 2.5-hour terrace hike, taking time to enjoy the scenery rather than rushing from one viewpoint to another. The walk finishes with a relaxed wine party, adding a playful touch to your mountain experience. After working up a little appetite on the trail, sit back, enjoy a drink, and take in the surrounding countryside.
After lunch, continue toward the Duliu River, following the river valley toward Congjiang. You'll visit a Dong village along the river, where traditional houses and the surrounding mountains create a particularly peaceful setting.
The afternoon continues with a deeper Miao cultural experience. At a Miao village beside the Duliu River, you'll meet a local intangible cultural heritage practitioner and learn about traditional Miao customs through hands-on activities. This is less about watching a performance and more about getting involved and understanding how these traditions remain part of everyday life.
Later, continue to Congjiang County and check into your hotel for the night.
Today you'll step into the world of the Yao people, with a day designed around local knowledge, wellness traditions and village life.
After breakfast, travel to a Yao village and visit a traditional medicinal herb base. The plants growing around these mountains are closely connected with local Yao wellness practices, and you'll learn how different herbs are traditionally collected and used.
From there, follow a roughly 1.5-hour walking route into the surrounding countryside to visit a Yao family. This is another moment where the itinerary deliberately slows down. Instead of simply entering a village, taking a few photographs and leaving, you'll have time to see how families live, work and interact with their mountain environment. You'll also have the chance to try on traditional Yao clothing, learning about the distinctive colors, patterns and handmade details that make Yao dress so recognizable.
After lunch comes one of the experiences that many people remember most from the trip: a traditional Yao herbal bath. The bath uses locally familiar herbs and is traditionally associated with Yao wellness culture. After several days of walking through the mountains, it is also a wonderfully relaxing way to spend the afternoon.
Before leaving, sit down for a taste of Yao oil tea, a local specialty that is quite different from ordinary brewed tea. Warm, savory and surprisingly filling, it offers another glimpse into the everyday food culture of the Yao communities.
Later, continue toward Zhaoxing, arriving in the afternoon. Check into your hotel and enjoy some free time to explore the village at your own pace.
Your final morning begins slowly in Zhaoxing Dong Village. Take a walk through the traditional wooden houses and along the village lanes, where distinctive Dong drum towers and covered bridges create one of the most recognizable village landscapes in southeastern Guizhou. Because this is your final morning, there is no need to rush. Enjoy some free time to wander, photograph the architecture or simply sit somewhere in the village and watch daily life unfold.
Then turn from observing to creating with a traditional Guizhou batik experience. You'll learn how wax is used to create patterns before the fabric is dyed with indigo. The process is simple in appearance but surprisingly detailed, and making something yourself gives you a better appreciation of the patience and craftsmanship behind these traditional textiles.
After lunch, begin your journey back to Guiyang by private vehicle. The drive marks the end of your six-day journey through Guizhou's mountains and ethnic communities. Your driver will take you directly to the airport or train station, with the logistics handled from door to door.
You leave Guizhou having seen much more than its famous landscapes: you've walked village trails, stayed in distinctive mountain accommodations, learned from local communities, tasted traditional foods and experienced cultural traditions that are still part of everyday life.
