Your Guizhou adventure begins in Guiyang, where your private driver will pick you up from your hotel in the morning. Leave the city behind and head southeast toward Kaili, entering a greener landscape of rolling mountains, forested hills and scattered villages.
Your first stop is Matang Gejia Village, home to the Gejia people, a community known for its distinctive clothing, silver ornaments and traditional handicrafts. Rather than simply walking through the village, you'll have the chance to get involved in one of its most recognizable traditions — wax dyeing. During the hands-on experience, you'll learn how traditional patterns are drawn and dyed onto fabric. It's a simple activity at first glance, but you'll quickly notice how much patience and precision goes into those seemingly effortless geometric designs.
After exploring the village and enjoying the surrounding mountain scenery, stop for lunch at a local restaurant, with your guide helping you choose local dishes along the way.
In the afternoon, continue to Shiqiao Ancient Papermaking Village, where traditional papermaking has been passed down through generations. The village is surrounded by lush mountains and streams, making the setting almost as interesting as the craft itself. You'll see how plant fibers are processed, beaten, spread and pressed into paper using traditional techniques. Better still, you can try making paper yourself, turning what might otherwise be a museum-style visit into something much more memorable.
After the experience, continue by private vehicle toward your hotel.
Wake up among the mountains and continue deeper into southeastern Guizhou. After breakfast, your private driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you toward Langde Miao Village, where the atmosphere becomes noticeably more rural.
Arriving at Langde Miao Village, you'll take an electric sightseeing vehicle into the village, saving your energy for exploring the traditional wooden houses and mountain scenery. Langde is particularly famous for its welcoming traditions. Depending on the day's performance schedule, you'll experience a traditional welcome ceremony with Miao singing, dancing and the famous door-blocking wine ritual. Don't be surprised if getting through the entrance takes a little longer than expected — that is part of the fun. Once inside, wander through the wooden houses and quiet lanes, with green mountains rising behind the village. The scenery here is especially beautiful when the surrounding hills are covered in mist.
After exploring Langde, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing to the quieter Ghetou Miao Village.
Ghetou offers a more intimate village experience. Instead of large-scale attractions, you'll find traditional houses, narrow paths, farmland and everyday village scenes unfolding around you. Take your time here. Walk through the village, observe the details of Miao architecture and enjoy the changing views of the surrounding mountains. It's one of those places where the journey itself becomes part of the attraction.
Later, continue by private vehicle to Rongjiang, your base for the night.
Today takes you further away from the better-known tourist routes. Start your morning in Rongjiang, where the best way to see local life is often simply to follow the morning crowd.
Head out early to explore the Rongjiang morning market, where local residents come to buy vegetables, fruit, fresh produce and everyday goods. This is a completely different side of Guizhou from the scenic viewpoints. You'll see local food being prepared, hear the lively conversations of vendors and shoppers, and get a glimpse of how people in the surrounding villages start their day.
After the market, continue by private vehicle into the mountains toward Zhanli Dong Village. Zhanli is known for its distinctive Dong culture and secluded setting. Wooden houses sit among green hills, while paths wind through the village and surrounding countryside. Take a relaxed walk through the village and pay attention to the details — timber construction, old village lanes, rice fields and the rhythm of everyday life. The appeal here is less about checking off attractions and more about experiencing a village that still feels genuinely lived in.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing toward Huanggang Dong Village. As the road climbs deeper into the mountains, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. Arrive in Huanggang, a traditional Dong village surrounded by forested hills and terraced fields. Spend the afternoon exploring on foot, admiring the wooden houses and distinctive village layout. With fewer distractions than larger tourist villages, Huanggang gives you time to slow down and simply enjoy the atmosphere.
Tonight, stay in the village and experience the peaceful side of rural Guizhou after the day-trippers have gone.
After breakfast, leave Huanggang and continue south toward Basha Miao Village, another of Guizhou's most distinctive mountain communities.
Basha is famous for preserving traditions that are rarely seen elsewhere. Upon arrival, take an electric sightseeing vehicle into the village and settle in for a traditional welcome performance. The village itself is surrounded by thick green hills, and its wooden houses blend naturally into the landscape. As you walk around, you'll notice that Basha has a very different character from the Miao villages you visited earlier — its traditions, clothing and customs give it a strong sense of identity.
After the visit, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, then continue your journey toward Zhaoxing.
By afternoon, you'll arrive at Zhaoxing Dong Village, one of the most atmospheric stops on the entire route. Wooden houses line the narrow streets, while the village's famous drum towers and covered Wind and Rain Bridges rise above the surrounding rooftops. The mountains provide a dramatic backdrop, particularly toward late afternoon when the light softens over the village.
Take a relaxed walk through the lanes and cross the bridges, stopping whenever you spot an interesting view or a quiet corner. As evening approaches, Zhaoxing becomes especially charming, with warm lights beginning to appear among the wooden houses.
Your final morning begins with one of the most scenic experiences of the journey: heading uphill from Zhaoxing to Tang'an Dong Village.
After breakfast, your private vehicle will take you from your hotel in Zhaoxing to Tang'an. Perched on the mountainside, Tang'an Dong Village offers wonderful views across terraced fields and green valleys. The village itself is compact and traditional, with wooden houses, drum towers and peaceful lanes that are perfect for a slow morning walk. Rather than returning by vehicle, you'll take the scenic hiking trail from Tang'an down to Zhaoxing.
The trail winds through rice terraces, forest and small rural paths, offering a completely different perspective of the area. Instead of looking at the mountains from the village, you'll walk directly through the landscape that surrounds these communities. Take your time along the way. Stop for photographs, enjoy the views across the terraces and watch village life unfold along the route. The hike is a fitting final chapter to the trip because it brings together everything you've experienced over the previous four days — mountain villages, traditional agriculture and the quieter side of Guizhou.
After arriving back in Zhaoxing, enjoy lunch and have some time to freshen up before your onward transfer.
In the afternoon, your private vehicle will take you to Congjiang High-Speed Railway Station for your onward journey. From Congjiang, you can take a high-speed train toward Guilin or Guiyang, making it easy to connect this Guizhou village journey with the next part of your China trip.
