Day 1 | Luoyang: Longmen Grottoes & Old City

Accommodation Accommodation:
4-star/5-star standard room
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

Your Luoyang adventure begins as you arrive by high-speed train. Once you step out of the station, your local guide and private driver will be waiting for you at the station exit. You won't need to figure out which taxi to take or how to get to your hotel with your luggage — we'll take care of that from the moment you arrive.

After a quick introduction, you'll head directly into the city. If your train arrives around lunchtime, we'll arrange a simple local lunch before sightseeing; otherwise, we'll first begin the tour and have lunch at a convenient time along the way.

Luoyang is one of China's great ancient capitals, but you don't really feel that history until you start seeing it in person. Today's route is designed to give you that first impression without trying to squeeze too many museums and monuments into a single afternoon.

After lunch, we'll drive to Longmen Grottoes, one of the most impressive historical sites around Luoyang. The first thing you'll notice is the setting. The caves and niches are carved directly into the limestone cliffs along the Yi River, so the visit is not simply about walking from one building to another. You'll be moving between river views, cliffs, stone carvings and open-air paths, with the scenery changing as you go. As you approach the main grotto area, the scale of the carvings becomes much easier to appreciate. Thousands of Buddhist images and inscriptions were created here over centuries, and the most famous section is the Fengxian Temple, where the enormous Vairocana Buddha sits high above the river. Rather than rushing through the grottoes and simply pointing out the largest statues, your guide will help you notice the smaller details too — the different facial expressions, hairstyles, clothing and carving styles that reveal how Buddhist art changed through different periods. Take your time here. The combination of the cliffs, the Yi River and the layers of ancient sculpture is one of those scenes that looks impressive in photographs but feels much more dramatic when you're standing underneath the rock face.

After Longmen Grottoes, we'll return toward central Luoyang and continue to the old city area. This part of the day feels completely different. Instead of monumental stone carvings and ancient Buddhist art, you'll see a more lively side of Luoyang — traditional-style streets, small shops, local snacks and people going about their everyday routines. You can take a relaxed walk through the old streets, stop for photos, and try a few local snacks if something catches your eye. Luoyang's food culture is worth leaving a little room for, especially if you're curious about local dishes rather than only looking for familiar restaurant menus. The contrast is part of the fun: only a few hours earlier you were standing beside centuries-old grottoes, and now you're walking through streets where locals are buying food, chatting and enjoying the evening.

In the evening, your private driver will take you to your hotel for check-in. You can have a relaxed evening, explore the neighborhood around your hotel, or simply take a break.

Day 2 | Luoyang: Luoyang Museum & National Peony Garden

Accommodation Accommodation:

MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up at the hotel and take you to the Luoyang Museum. After seeing Longmen Grottoes the previous day, the museum gives you a little more context for the city you've been exploring. Luoyang served as the capital of several important Chinese dynasties, and its museum collection brings together artifacts from different periods of that long history. You'll see ancient pottery, ceramics, bronzeware, sculptures, and Tang Dynasty pieces. Rather than trying to cover every display, your guide will focus on the objects that help connect the museum with what you've already seen around the city.
A practical note: museum reservations can be difficult during summer holidays and major public holidays. If we can't secure a suitable reservation for your travel date, we'll switch this visit to the Luoyang Folk Museum instead. You won't need to spend your morning worrying about reservation slots, and the rest of the itinerary can continue as planned.

After the museum, we'll stop for lunch at a local restaurant. Luoyang has plenty of regional dishes worth trying, so if you're interested in local food, just let your guide know what you'd like to experience. We can recommend some of the city's specialties and choose a restaurant that fits your preferences.

After lunch, we'll continue to Luoyang National Peony Garden. This is the part of the trip you've been saving the season for. When the peonies are in bloom, the garden takes on a completely different character, with rows of flowers spreading across the grounds in shades of pink, red, purple, white, and more. Don't feel that you need to rush through the garden. Walk slowly, look at the different varieties, and take some time for photographs. The flowers don't all bloom at exactly the same time, so the appearance of the garden can vary depending on your travel date and the weather.

The garden is also a lovely change of pace after two days of historical sightseeing. There are no stone carvings to study or long museum galleries to work through — just colorful flowers, open space, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

If you're traveling specifically for the peonies, we recommend visiting during the main flowering season in April and early May. The exact peak varies from year to year, so we'll always keep the actual bloom conditions in mind when planning your visit.

After your time in the peony garden, your driver will pick you up and take you to Luoyang Longmen Railway Station for your departure train. We'll plan the transfer around your train schedule, giving you enough time to reach the station without having to rush at the end of the trip. As you leave Luoyang, you'll have experienced quite a lot in just two days — ancient Buddhist art at Longmen, the atmosphere of the old city, the history behind Luoyang's ancient-capital story, and finally the peonies that have made the city famous.

Came for the Peonies

The peonies were the main reason I booked this trip, and luckily they were in really good shape when we visited. The National Peony Garden was huge and there were so many different colors that I probably took too many photos.
I also liked that the tour didn't make the whole trip about flowers. Longmen Grottoes was completely different and probably the most memorable place overall. Our guide gave us enough background to understand what we were looking at, but we still had time to wander around by ourselves.
The train station pickup and drop-off were also very convenient. For a short two-day trip, everything felt quite straightforward.

Thanks, Niall! Glad the peonies were showing off when you visited — the timing can be a bit of a gamble with flowers. Hope you took home a few good photos!

More Than Just Dressing Up

I thought the Hanfu experience would mainly be about getting dressed up and taking a few photos, but I ended up enjoying the whole day much more than expected. The hair and makeup were beautifully done, and everything felt quite natural once we were out exploring.
We visited a few of Luoyang's historic places along the way, but the best part was simply walking around in Hanfu and having time to enjoy the atmosphere. The whole day felt relaxed and fun, and I came home with some of my favorite photos from the trip.

Thank you, Elowen! We're so glad the Hanfu experience turned out to be more than you expected. We also love keeping this day relaxed, so you have time to enjoy the outfit, take photos, and simply take in Luoyang without feeling rushed.

Not Just a Temple Visit

I was expecting this to be mostly a Shaolin Temple sightseeing trip, so the morning at the martial arts school was a really nice surprise. We got there early and watched the students training before joining some of the basic exercises. I lasted considerably less time than they did! The two-hour Kung Fu lesson was probably my favorite part. It was much more about stance, balance and repetition than I expected, which made me appreciate the performance on the last day a lot more. The driver was also very punctual throughout the trip, which made everything feel easy.

Thank you, Orlaith! And yes, the students make those "simple" exercises look much easier than they really are. We're glad you enjoyed getting a little closer to their daily routine.

Kaifeng Was an Unexpected Favorite

Before the trip, I was mostly interested in Luoyang and Shaolin, so I wasn't expecting Kaifeng to be my favorite day. Longting and the Iron Pagoda were interesting, but Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden was what really stayed with me. We went in the afternoon and the atmosphere gradually became more lively. The old-style streets, bridges and waterways made it easy to imagine what a busy Song Dynasty city might have felt like. It was also nice to have a day that wasn't just about temples and monuments.

Thank you, Niamh! Kaifeng can definitely sneak up on you. It has a different rhythm from Luoyang and Shaolin, and we're glad you had enough time to enjoy the atmosphere instead of simply checking off the sights.
