Day 1 | Luoyang to Dengfeng by private car: Shaolin Temple & Pagoda Forest, back to Luoyang

Accommodation Accommodation:
4-star/5-star standard room
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

Your trip begins when you arrive in Luoyang by high-speed train in the morning. Rather than spending your first few hours waiting around for a hotel check-in, your private driver will meet you at the station and take you directly toward Dengfeng, the hometown of Shaolin Kung Fu. The drive takes roughly 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic. It is an easy way to transition from Luoyang into the greener foothills around Songshan.

We'll arrange a simple local lunch along the way or around Shaolin Temple, depending on your arrival time. There's no need to worry about squeezing a meal into the sightseeing schedule—the idea today is to keep the pace comfortable.

After lunch, you'll arrive at Shaolin Temple, one of the most famous Buddhist temples in China and the birthplace of the Shaolin martial arts tradition. Take your time walking through the temple grounds rather than treating it as simply another historical stop. The atmosphere changes as you move deeper inside: ancient halls, stone inscriptions, old trees, and incense smoke give the complex a quieter character than its famous Kung Fu reputation might suggest. One of the interesting things to notice is the relationship between Buddhism and martial arts here. Shaolin Kung Fu was not developed simply as a modern performance. It grew within the temple's long religious and cultural history, which makes seeing the temple before the Kung Fu show particularly worthwhile.

From the temple, continue to the Pagoda Forest, where dozens of ancient brick and stone pagodas stand among the trees at the foot of Songshan. The pagodas vary in size, shape, and age, and their weathered surfaces give the area a very different feeling from the main temple. This is one of the places where it is worth slowing down for a few minutes. Instead of rushing from one structure to another, look at the details of the pagodas and the surrounding mountain landscape. The combination of old stone, trees, and mountain slopes also makes this one of the more atmospheric parts of the Shaolin visit.

Later, settle in for a Shaolin Kung Fu performance. This is the energetic contrast to the quieter temple and Pagoda Forest. Expect fast footwork, flexibility, jumps, weapons demonstrations, and movements that look almost unreal when performed at full speed. If you're particularly interested in martial arts, pay attention to the performers' control rather than just the dramatic movements. The precision and coordination are often more impressive than the biggest stunt.

After the Shaolin visit, your private vehicle will take you back to Luoyang. After a full afternoon of sightseeing, you'll check into your hotel and have the evening free to rest. If you still have some energy, Luoyang is especially enjoyable after dark, when the old streets and historic areas take on a completely different atmosphere. But there' s no need to force another activity into the evening—you'll have a much more distinctive day ahead tomorrow.

Day 2 | Luoyang: Hanfu Styling, Longmen Grottoes, White Horse Temple & Old Town

Accommodation Accommodation:

MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

After breakfast, today's experience starts with something completely different from yesterday's martial arts adventure: traditional Hanfu makeup and styling.

You'll be helped into your chosen Hanfu outfit, followed by traditional hairstyling and makeup. The styling can be coordinated with the type and color of your clothing, creating a more complete historical look rather than simply putting on a costume.
A useful tip: wear comfortable shoes underneath your Hanfu. Your outer outfit may look elegant and traditional, but you'll be walking quite a bit today.

Once you're ready, your private driver will take you to Longmen Grottoes. Seeing Longmen in Hanfu is a completely different experience from visiting it in ordinary clothes. The ancient cliffs, stone caves, Buddhist statues, and Yi River create a natural backdrop that feels almost cinematic. Longmen stretches along both sides of the river, with thousands of Buddhist images and inscriptions carved into the limestone cliffs. As you walk through the grotto area, you'll see carvings ranging from small figures to enormous statues. The scale becomes especially striking when you stand beneath the larger caves and look upward.

The famous Fengxian Temple area is a highlight. The enormous Buddha and surrounding statues were carved into the cliff more than a thousand years ago, and the combination of the figures, exposed rock face, and river valley makes this one of the most impressive views of the day. Rather than rushing through the grottoes, leave some time for photographs along the riverside and across the water. The natural light changes the appearance of the stone, so the same statue can feel surprisingly different from different viewpoints.

After the morning at Longmen, stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing. You'll have spent several hours walking in Hanfu, so lunch is also a useful chance to sit down, adjust your clothing, freshen up, and take a short break.

In the afternoon, continue to White Horse Temple, another essential part of Luoyang's history. Founded during the Eastern Han period, White Horse Temple is traditionally regarded as the first officially established Buddhist temple in China. Its long history gives the complex a different character from Longmen: instead of monumental cliff carvings, you'll find courtyards, temple halls, old trees, stone monuments, and a more peaceful rhythm. Walking through the temple in Hanfu works particularly well here. The architecture is quieter and more intimate, giving you plenty of opportunities for natural photographs without needing to pose in front of every attraction. Take a little time to look beyond the main halls. The smaller courtyards, decorative details, old trees, and stone carvings often provide some of the nicest backgrounds for photos.

Later, return toward the historic center and explore Luoyang Old Town. After spending the day around major historical monuments, this part of the itinerary brings you closer to everyday city life. Traditional-style streets, local shops, snacks, old buildings, and evening activity create a more relaxed atmosphere. Walking through the old streets in Hanfu also makes the experience feel less like a standard sightseeing tour. You can stop for photographs, browse small shops, or simply enjoy the atmosphere without having to follow a strict sequence of attractions. This is also a good place to try some local Luoyang snacks if you still have room after lunch. Luoyang's food culture is worth exploring beyond the famous attractions.

Before ending the day, sit down for a quieter cultural experience: Chinese calligraphy. You'll learn the basics of holding a traditional brush and try writing Chinese characters yourself. Don't worry if your first few strokes look nothing like the elegant examples on the wall—that is part of the fun. After a day of walking, photography, and sightseeing, calligraphy gives you a chance to slow down and experience a different side of traditional Chinese culture.

At the end of the day, return to the Hanfu styling studio to remove your makeup and change back into your normal clothes. Your private driver will then take you back to your hotel. It makes for a nice ending: after spending an entire day seeing Luoyang through the lens of traditional Chinese culture, you can return to the present, relax, and enjoy your final evening in the city.

Day 3 | Luoyang Departure

Accommodation Accommodation:
N/A (Flexible, can be included based on your needs)
MealMeal:
Meals are flexible and can be included or excluded. When included, authentic local dining will be arranged.

After breakfast, you'll have some time to enjoy your final morning in Luoyang. When it's time to leave, your private driver will pick you up directly from your hotel and take you to Luoyang high-speed railway station according to your train departure time. We recommend leaving enough time for the station, especially if you have luggage or are continuing to another city. Once you board the train, your 3-day Luoyang Hanfu experience comes to an end—with Shaolin Kung Fu, ancient grottoes, historic temples, traditional streets, and a full day dressed in Hanfu all packed into one short journey.

What Our Travelers Say

Came for the Peonies

The peonies were the main reason I booked this trip, and luckily they were in really good shape when we visited. The National Peony Garden was huge and there were so many different colors that I probably took too many photos.
I also liked that the tour didn't make the whole trip about flowers. Longmen Grottoes was completely different and probably the most memorable place overall. Our guide gave us enough background to understand what we were looking at, but we still had time to wander around by ourselves.
The train station pickup and drop-off were also very convenient. For a short two-day trip, everything felt quite straightforward.

Thanks, Niall! Glad the peonies were showing off when you visited — the timing can be a bit of a gamble with flowers. Hope you took home a few good photos!

More Than Just Dressing Up

I thought the Hanfu experience would mainly be about getting dressed up and taking a few photos, but I ended up enjoying the whole day much more than expected. The hair and makeup were beautifully done, and everything felt quite natural once we were out exploring.
We visited a few of Luoyang's historic places along the way, but the best part was simply walking around in Hanfu and having time to enjoy the atmosphere. The whole day felt relaxed and fun, and I came home with some of my favorite photos from the trip.

Thank you, Elowen! We're so glad the Hanfu experience turned out to be more than you expected. We also love keeping this day relaxed, so you have time to enjoy the outfit, take photos, and simply take in Luoyang without feeling rushed.

Not Just a Temple Visit

I was expecting this to be mostly a Shaolin Temple sightseeing trip, so the morning at the martial arts school was a really nice surprise. We got there early and watched the students training before joining some of the basic exercises. I lasted considerably less time than they did! The two-hour Kung Fu lesson was probably my favorite part. It was much more about stance, balance and repetition than I expected, which made me appreciate the performance on the last day a lot more. The driver was also very punctual throughout the trip, which made everything feel easy.

Thank you, Orlaith! And yes, the students make those "simple" exercises look much easier than they really are. We're glad you enjoyed getting a little closer to their daily routine.

Kaifeng Was an Unexpected Favorite

Before the trip, I was mostly interested in Luoyang and Shaolin, so I wasn't expecting Kaifeng to be my favorite day. Longting and the Iron Pagoda were interesting, but Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden was what really stayed with me. We went in the afternoon and the atmosphere gradually became more lively. The old-style streets, bridges and waterways made it easy to imagine what a busy Song Dynasty city might have felt like. It was also nice to have a day that wasn't just about temples and monuments.

Thank you, Niamh! Kaifeng can definitely sneak up on you. It has a different rhythm from Luoyang and Shaolin, and we're glad you had enough time to enjoy the atmosphere instead of simply checking off the sights.
