Your Shaolin experience begins when you arrive in Luoyang around midday by high-speed train. Your private driver will meet you at the station and help with your luggage, so you can get straight into the trip without spending time figuring out local transport.
Before sightseeing, we'll take you for lunch at a local restaurant. It's a relaxed way to settle in and get your first taste of Luoyang before heading to the afternoon's main attraction.
After lunch, drive to Longmen Grottoes, one of the most remarkable historical sites around Luoyang. As you walk along the Yi River, the scenery gradually changes from open river views to dramatic limestone cliffs filled with thousands of Buddhist statues, niches and inscriptions. Some carvings are enormous and immediately catch your attention, while others are surprisingly small, tucked into the rock and easy to miss if you rush through. Take your time around the main grotto areas and look closely at the different styles of the sculptures. The famous Fengxian Temple area is especially impressive, where the huge Vairocana Buddha is carved directly into the cliff face. With the river below and the surrounding hills behind you, it is one of those places where the setting is almost as memorable as the carvings themselves. This first afternoon also gives you a useful introduction to the Buddhist tradition that you'll encounter again in a very different form around Shaolin.
After exploring Longmen Grottoes, your private driver will take you from Luoyang to Dengfeng. As the city gradually gives way to countryside and mountain scenery, you'll start to feel the change in atmosphere. Dengfeng sits at the foot of Songshan Mountain and has long been closely associated with both Chinese martial arts and Buddhist culture.
Once you arrive, check into your hotel and take the evening to rest. Tomorrow starts early, so there's no need to squeeze another attraction into the schedule.
Today is the most hands-on day of your trip, and it begins early. After an early breakfast, we'll take you to a local martial arts school to see how the students start their day. You'll watch them stretch, practice basic movements, work on flexibility and conditioning, and repeat their forms under the coach's direction. The atmosphere is quite different from a performance. There are no costumes or stage lights here—just students training, correcting their movements and repeating exercises until they get them right. If the coach gives permission, you can also join part of the morning practice. Don't worry about keeping up with the students; many of them have been training for years. Simply following the basic movements gives you a much better appreciation of the physical discipline involved in Kung Fu.
After the morning activity and breakfast, you'll begin your own two-hour Shaolin Kung Fu lesson. Your instructor will adjust the training to your experience and physical ability, starting with fundamental movements such as stance, balance, stretching, controlled kicks and simple combinations. The lesson is not designed to turn you into a Kung Fu expert in two hours. Instead, it gives you a genuine introduction to how Shaolin martial arts are learned—through repetition, concentration and careful control of the body. You'll have plenty of opportunities to try the movements yourself and receive corrections from the instructor. Some techniques may look easy when demonstrated, but you'll probably discover that holding the right stance or keeping your balance is harder than it appears! After the lesson, we'll arrange lunch so you can properly recharge.
The afternoon deliberately takes a completely different direction. After an energetic morning, you'll have time for a meditation and scripture-copying experience. Rather than adding another busy sightseeing stop, we leave the afternoon open for you to slow down and experience the quieter side of Shaolin culture. Meditation gives you a chance to settle your breathing and simply enjoy a little stillness. You'll then try traditional scripture copying, focusing on the brush and the characters in front of you rather than worrying about getting anywhere quickly. The contrast is part of what makes this day special. In the morning, you're concentrating on movement, strength and physical discipline; in the afternoon, the focus shifts to stillness, patience and concentration.
After the afternoon experience, your driver will take you back to the hotel. The evening is free for you to relax and have dinner at your own pace. After an early start and several hours of physical activity, you'll probably appreciate having a quiet evening before tomorrow's visit to Shaolin Temple.
After breakfast, we'll head to Shaolin Temple, set against the wooded slopes of Songshan Mountain. Having spent the previous day learning some basic Kung Fu yourself, you'll probably look at the temple and its martial arts tradition with a little more curiosity. Shaolin is not simply a place associated with famous Kung Fu moves; it has a long Buddhist history, and the connection between religious practice and martial arts is a major part of its identity. Take your time walking through the temple grounds, where old trees, traditional halls and mountain scenery create a peaceful atmosphere. Compared with the energetic martial arts school yesterday morning, the pace here feels much calmer.
Continue to the Pagoda Forest, where numerous stone pagodas stand among the trees as memorials to monks from different periods. The pagodas vary considerably in size, shape and decoration, reflecting the different periods in which they were built. Walking among them is particularly atmospheric, especially with the surrounding greenery and mountains in the background. It's also a good place to pause and take in the scale of Shaolin's history. The martial arts tradition may be what first brings most people here, but places like the Pagoda Forest reveal the much older Buddhist heritage behind it.
Before leaving, watch a Shaolin Kung Fu performance featuring traditional forms, kicks, jumps and other techniques. After yesterday's training, you'll have a much better idea of how difficult some of these movements really are. You may even recognize a few basic positions from your own lesson, although the speed and precision of the performers will make it clear how much training separates a beginner from a professional. It's a lively final look at the martial arts side of Shaolin and a fitting way to finish your experience.
After the visit, we'll arrange lunch before driving back to Luoyang. Your private driver will take you directly to Luoyang high-speed railway station, with enough time built into the transfer according to your train schedule. You won't need to worry about finding a taxi or navigating the station with your luggage.
Once you board your train, your 3-day journey comes to an end. You'll leave having experienced several very different sides of this region—from the ancient Buddhist carvings of Longmen Grottoes to the demanding routine of a martial arts school, your own first Kung Fu lesson, a quiet afternoon of meditation and scripture copying, and finally the historic heart of Shaolin itself.
