7-Day Luoyang In-Depth Tour: Ancient Capital & Local Life

Welcome to Luoyang. After arriving in the morning, your private driver will meet you at the airport or railway station and take you to your hotel. After checking in, take some time to freshen up and rest. 

In the afternoon, your driver will take you to the Longmen Grottoes area. Enter through the South Gate and begin with Xishan Grottoes, where the cliffs along the Yi River are covered with Buddhist sculptures carved over several centuries. Rather than simply ticking off the famous caves, take some time to notice how different periods left their own artistic signature here. The Northern Wei sculptures tend to have more slender, elegant forms, while the Tang-period works become fuller and more confident in their proportions.

You'll see Binyang Middle Cave, with its elaborate Buddhist carvings; Lotus Cave, named after the beautifully carved lotus motif on its ceiling; and Wanfo Cave, where countless small Buddha images cover the walls.

Then comes Fengxian Temple, the visual centerpiece of the western cliffs. The enormous Vairocana Buddha looks down from the rock face toward the river, surrounded by other monumental figures. Standing at the bottom of the cliff gives you a sense of the scale that photographs simply cannot convey. The Yi River, wooded hills and layers of ancient carvings make this more than an archaeological visit—it is one of those places where history and landscape are inseparable.

After the grottoes, head toward Longmen Ancient Street for dinner. This is your chance to start exploring Luoyang through its food. Try a traditional Luoyang Water Banquet, where a succession of soup-based dishes is served in a style that reflects the city's long culinary tradition. If you prefer something simpler, a bowl of local mutton soup is another classic choice.

If your visit coincides with the "Light Up Longmen" event, you can also choose to return to the scenic area in the evening for the illuminated Xishan Grottoes and Xiangshan Temple. The carved cliffs look completely different after dark, with the lights emphasizing the contours of the ancient statues and surrounding mountains.

After breakfast, we'll pick you up from your hotel and drive to White Horse Temple, widely regarded as one of the earliest Buddhist temples established in China. The temple is especially interesting because its story extends beyond China. As you explore the grounds, you'll find architectural elements and religious spaces reflecting Chinese, Indian, Myanmar and Thai Buddhist traditions. Walk through the temple courtyards at a relaxed pace, taking time to look at the old trees, traditional halls and stone monuments. The atmosphere here is noticeably quieter than many of Luoyang's busier attractions, making the morning a good introduction to the city's religious heritage. After the visit, we'll stop for lunch before continuing into the afternoon.

Next, head to Luoyang Museum. Advance reservation is required, so we recommend arranging this before your trip. The museum is a useful place to visit after White Horse Temple because it puts the city's long history into a much wider context. Luoyang served as a capital for several important dynasties, and the collection reflects the city's role at the center of ancient Chinese civilization. Take time to look beyond the most famous objects. You'll find bronzes, ceramics, sculptures and archaeological discoveries spanning different periods. Objects such as the early bronze jue decorated with raised nipple-like motifs and Tang sancai pieces reveal how craftsmanship changed over time. The museum also helps connect what you have already seen at Longmen with the larger story of Luoyang as an ancient capital.

As evening approaches, head to Luoyi Ancient City. This is where you can switch from sightseeing mode to something a little more playful. Choose a traditional Hanfu outfit and take a walk through the historic-style streets as the lights come on. The area becomes particularly lively after dark, with traditional performances, handicrafts, music and other intangible cultural heritage activities taking place around the old streets. You don't need to hurry from one show to another. Take your time walking through the lanes, stop for snacks, take a few photos in your Hanfu and simply enjoy the atmosphere.

After breakfast, your driver will take you to the Sui and Tang Luoyang City Ruins. Luoyang was one of the most important cities in imperial China, and during the Sui and Tang dynasties it developed into a vast capital connected with the wider Silk Road world.

Today, the surviving archaeological remains sit within landscaped surroundings, creating an unusual combination of open green space and traces of an ancient city. As you walk through the park, it takes a little imagination to picture the scale of the original capital—but that is also what makes the experience interesting. From here, continue to Yingtian Gate, one of the symbolic gateways of the ancient city.

Visit the Yingtian Gate Heritage Museum to learn more about the architecture and history of the ancient capital. The gate was far more than an entrance. It was an important ceremonial space where major imperial events took place. The scale of the reconstructed structure gives you a better idea of how imposing the ancient capital must have appeared to visitors arriving from the surrounding regions. If there is a scheduled cultural performance during your visit, it is worth staying to watch. These performances bring the historical setting to life in a way that museum displays alone cannot. After the morning sightseeing, we'll arrange lunch nearby before continuing.

In the afternoon, continue to the Mingtang and Tiantang Scenic Area, where you can explore the architectural landmarks associated with the period when Wu Zetian ruled from Luoyang. The buildings are striking in scale, and the surrounding open spaces make it easy to appreciate their proportions. Inside, displays and performances help explain the role these structures played in the political and ceremonial life of the era. Make your way up Tiantang for a broader view over Luoyang. From above, the modern city stretches beyond the historical buildings, creating a nice visual contrast between the ancient capital and the city that stands here today.

After dinner, stay in the area for the evening atmosphere. You can enjoy local dishes such as sour soup hotpot, then head back outside as Yingtian Gate and the Mingtang-Tiantang area begin to light up. The illuminated buildings look especially dramatic after dark. Rather than treating the night show as a separate attraction, think of it as the final chapter of your day—the same historical sites you explored in daylight taking on a completely different character under the lights.

After breakfast, pick up from your hotel and begin the drive from Luoyang to Dengfeng, the mountain city closely associated with Shaolin Kung Fu. The scenery gradually changes as you leave Luoyang behind and approach the Songshan Mountain area. 

Arrive at Shaolin Temple, surrounded by the wooded slopes of Songshan Mountain. Explore the temple grounds and learn about the Buddhist tradition that developed here. Shaolin is famous around the world for Kung Fu, but its religious history is just as important. The temple's halls, old trees and mountain setting create a peaceful atmosphere that feels very different from the energy of a martial arts performance.

Continue to the Pagoda Forest, where stone pagodas dedicated to monks from different historical periods stand among the trees. Take your time here. The forest is particularly atmospheric when you step away from the busier temple areas and look at the different shapes, sizes and decorative details of the pagodas.

After the visit, we'll arrange lunch before returning to Luoyang.

Before leaving the area, enjoy a Shaolin Kung Fu performance. The performers combine speed, flexibility, strength and traditional martial arts techniques in a lively demonstration. Watching the performance after walking through the temple and Pagoda Forest gives you a fuller picture of Shaolin—not just as a famous Kung Fu brand, but as a place where martial arts and Buddhist culture have developed side by side. After the show, your private driver will take you back to Luoyang and return you to your hotel.

After several days of historic sites, today gives you a chance to slow the pace and enjoy Luoyang's greener side. After breakfast, your driver will take you to the Sui and Tang Dynasties Relic Botanical Garden. The garden combines landscaped spaces, ponds, walking paths and seasonal flowers with a setting connected to Luoyang's ancient history. It's a pleasant place to walk without feeling that you need to constantly search for the next landmark.

Depending on the season, different areas of the garden take on completely different colors. Spring is particularly beautiful, but the garden remains enjoyable outside the main flower season when the trees and landscaped areas are at their best.

After lunch, head to the China National Flower Garden, a spacious garden where you can enjoy seasonal flowers and peaceful landscaped surroundings. 

If you're visiting during Luoyang's peony season, this is the perfect time to see the city's most iconic flower at its best. Wander along the garden paths surrounded by peonies in different colors, from rich reds and soft pinks to elegant whites and more unusual varieties. The exact blooming period can vary slightly each year depending on the weather, so we'll help you plan your visit around the actual conditions.

Outside the peony season, you'll still find plenty to enjoy. Other seasonal flowers, green gardens and open walking paths create a relaxed setting for a leisurely afternoon. Rather than rushing from one attraction to another, take your time here and simply enjoy the changing scenery.

In the evening, head to Xigong Small Street for dinner. This is a good place to return to the everyday side of Luoyang after several days of major attractions. Try local specialties such as traditional potstickers, rice noodles and other small dishes. You can wander between food stalls, order a few things to share and decide what looks good as you go. There's no need for a formal dinner tonight—the fun is in tasting a little of everything.

After breakfast, head to Guanlin Temple, a historic site associated with Guan Yu, the famous general from the Three Kingdoms period. The site is traditionally connected with the burial of Guan Yu's head, and over the centuries the temple became an important place for honoring his ideals of loyalty and righteousness.

The architecture has a more solemn and traditional character than some of Luoyang's larger attractions. Walk through the courtyards, look at the stone carvings and wooden structures, and take time to understand why Guan Yu became such an important cultural figure long after the Three Kingdoms period itself.

After the visit, we'll arrange lunch before giving you a more relaxed afternoon. 

You've already covered most of Luoyang's major historical sites, so today's afternoon is intentionally flexible. You can spend the time shopping, revisiting an area you particularly enjoyed, exploring local streets or simply taking a break at the hotel.

If you want souvenirs, this is a good time to look for Tang sancai ceramics, traditional Luoyang palace lanterns and other local handicrafts. Rather than rushing through a souvenir shop, we can point you toward places where you can browse at your own pace.

For your final full evening, choose a local restaurant and order a few dishes you haven't tried yet—or return to a favorite from earlier in the trip. Seven days gives you something that a quick Luoyang visit cannot: enough time to discover that the city is not just about ancient capitals and famous attractions. Its food, evening streets, gardens and everyday neighborhoods become part of the journey too.

After breakfast, take your time packing and checking out. Depending on your departure schedule, you can rest at the hotel or visit a nearby place for a final walk around Luoyang. When it's time to leave, your private driver will pick you up from the hotel and take you to Luoyang Railway Station, Luoyang Longmen High-Speed Railway Station or the airport, depending on your onward journey.

After seven days of grottoes, ancient temples, imperial ruins, Hanfu evenings, gardens, Shaolin and plenty of local food, your Luoyang journey comes to an end. You'll leave not only having seen the city's most famous sights, but also having had enough time to experience the slower, less obvious side of one of China's great ancient capitals.
